Story

From Adversity to Adventure

Our company, MBTION was born in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria’s devastating dance with Puerto Rico in 2017, and our tale unfolds from the depths of loss.

A transformation transpired as a world class car interior fabricator and former Car Audio World Champion turned Uber driver after his shop was destroyed and looted, found a new purpose inspired by the innocent musings of his 7-year-old son and Co-Founder, Marcos Alexis, and how his enchanting notion to unveil Puerto Rico’s magic to the world gave birth to an idea: MBTION (Marcos Best Tours In Our Nation).

As life was really hard and 19 hours shifts Ubering were consuming our founders life, who was only left with his car and some clothes after the hurricane, he was still trying to squeeze time to get all the permits, insurance and licences to register his new venture, but also had to drive that much to get the needed money to make it happen. But one day, while doing a $5 ride at midnight he was telling a customer about his kid’s idea and his struggles with time, and when they arrived to the destination the customer replied to him “Man, you must stop doing the rat race and take control of your life. Look in the mirror, is this what you want for your son? Quit this and get your act together, so you can do what you enjoy showing visitors your island, and being an example give your son a chance in life”. That line made him realize that he had to act swiftly and in a leap of faith and with a $5,000 loan from his father, he quited doing Uber following his son’s vision and his passion to build and, like a Lego set, put each piece together until MBTION was born.

Since then our experiences have been inspired by Marcos Alexis, who in 2023 became the World’s Youngest Internationaly Certified Tour Guide at only 12 years old, and crafted with echoes of love and hospitality reminiscent of our grandparents’s countryside haven in Camuy, who taught us that withholding the richness of the experiences we can deliver from others was a subtle theft. Thus, with that ethos guiding us, we extend to each customer an unparalleled human experience –which we believe is their birthright, not just a paid service.

But we also see ourselves as Ambassadors and keepers of our beloved island, and understanding our duty is with our people we share our blessings with those in need not only delivering food, water and free transportation during emergencies, but also sharing our experiences with our disadvantaged communities families so they can experience and discover a Puerto Rico their limitations don’t allow them to know.

With that in mind our focus lies in meticulously curating personalized adventures to Puerto Rico’s most exceptional destinations, from our stunning bioluminiscent bays, lush rainforests and pristine beaches and cays, to the historical wonders of America’s oldest city Old San Juan, and teaming that focus with our intimate knowledge of this enchanting place, cultivated through a lifetime exploring it’s captivating landscapes, we make sure deliver more than just a vacation; an immersive journey into the soul of Puerto Rico’s hidden treasures.

Absolutely! Our tours are designed with families in mind, offering safe, enriching experiences that cater to all age groups, from young children to teenagers.
We prioritize comfort and safety in all our tours. Our senior- friendly experiences offer easy access, minimal walking, and enhanced safety protocols to ensure a worry-free adventure.
Our private luxury transportation will pick at the cruise ship pier or at t h e Historic Condado Vanderbilt Hotel, but you can upgrade to our door-to-door service to your hotel or AirBnB in San Juan, Condado, Isla Verde, Dorado, Rio Grande, or Humacao.
No doubt San Juan, Condado, Miramar, Santurce, and Isla Verde are the best places to stay because of the convenience factor. All four places are in a 5 mile radius and have many restaurants, bars, and clubs within a 5-10 minute Uber ride. They are also very close to Old San Juan, our main touristic attraction. Rio Grande and Dorado have the Top 2 Luxury hotels in Puerto Rico, Dorado Beach, A Ritz Carlton Reserve and the Saint Regis, but are an hour drive to San Juan and have very few amenities close by.
The best way to see and learn about Old San Juan is by doing a private driving-walking tour, mainly because Old San Juan is not 2-block old city and to completely see it by walking takes 6+ hours going uphill and downhill and sweating under the scorching Caribbean sun. It will prove to be a bit unpleasant, meanwhile in a driving-walking tour you can see it all and walk only in the main places or the ones that calls your attention and go back to your A/C-equipped vehicle to cool down.
If you were to explore every street in Old San Juan, you will need close to 8 hours. Additionally, each fort takes at least 2 hours to see and learn about. That’s why at MBTION VIP, we came up with 2-4 driving-walking tours that take the long walks out of the equation and lets you see everything in as little as 2 hours.
There are many great things to do in Puerto Rico, but swimming in the Bioluminescent Bay in Parguera is the Top 1 you will remember forever. A historical Old San Juan Tour is also a must-do, together with the Camuy Caves, a Rainforest Tour (Toro Negro or El Yunque), a snorkeling or boat tour to Cay, and a visit to a Rum Distillery are the Top 6 Things You Should Not Miss in Puerto Rico, and MBTION VIP offers them all!
There are 2 Distillery Tours close to San Juan in Cataño and Bayamon. Bacardi is the largest rum producer in the world, but Barrilito is arguably the finest and their historic tour takes you to where they age the rum where you can actually see the whole operation and have a glimpse of what a boutique Rum Distillery is. We love Bacardi, but the Barrilito tour is head and shoulders above Bacardi’s offering and you can do it in our Old San Juan and Barrilito Tour or our Full Day Old San Juan experience!
A weekend in Puerto Rico is already a well-spent weekend, but we say a minimum of 3 free days, not including your arrival and departure day, are needed to do the Top 10 List if you do it in a well organized way. Like our Puerto Rico in 3 days package where you see Old San Juan, our finest Distillery, Piñones which is our black heritage area, beaches, the Camuy Caves, Toro Negro Rainforest and do a boat tour that includes snorkeling, the Caribbean sunset and swimming in the Bioluminescent Bay!
There really isn’t a best time/month to visit Puerto Rico because the weather is mostly the same year-round. It’s drier at the beginning of the year, and from May to September it tends to rain in the afternoons. March and April are the peak months of the high season, so expect the highest prices. Then October and November are the low season so hotel prices get a bit lower which one might consider to save some money, but like we said any time is a good time to visit the island!
This is the run down of the tourist attractions and the must-do tourist attractions, and we will give you the Top 12 Must-Do Attractions & Things To Do in Puerto Rico: Old San Juan and its forts (El Morro and San Cristobal), Swimming in the Bioluminescence of the Waters of La Parguera’s Papayo Bay, The Tropical Rainforest (Toro Negro or El Yunque) The Camuy Caves, A boat tour to Cay (Caracoles, Enriquito, Isla Carmona, Icacos or Palominos), A snorkeling tour, A Rum Distillery tour, A hiking tour, The black sand beaches (Humacao, Barconeta or Vieques), Mar Chiquita Beach, and Flamenco Beach in Culebra Island, but this one requires taking more than an hour ride to Ceiba (early AM) to then take an hour long ferry ride to Culebra If you want only 2, then Old San Juan and Swimming with the Bioluminescence at La Parguera.
Not that we are biased, but the best tours are always the private ones that offer tours on off the beaten paths/places. Doing Toro Negro Tropical Forest instead of El Yunque National Park, a snorkeling, sunset and swimming on Bioluminescence filled bay, or a hiking tour in a secret trail and then a hidden waterfall guarantees you a unique experience and pictures you can brag about that makes you stand out from the crowd. MBTION VIP does that all!
If you really want to enjoy Puerto Rico, we recommend you to look for a private off the beaten path tour offerings like our Mar Chiquita Hiking and Toro Negro Waterfalls Tropical Rainforest Tour, La Parguera Snorkeling, Sunset and Bioluminiscense Filled Water Swimming Bay Boat Tour, or our hybrid driving and walking Old San Juan Tour with Rum Distillery are among the best to avoid crowds and guarantee only a few in people in the spots you will visit!
Puerto Rico has many areas that can be considered tropical rainforest, but there are 2 protected areas: The well-known El Yunque National Forest which is 28,000 acres, and our favorite Toro Negro Tropical Rainforest who is just shy of 7,000 acres but completely off the beaten path and with many advantages over El Yunque. Both are amazing but if you want the best experience, we recommend you our bucket list Toro Negro Tropical Rainforest Tours!
The bioluminescent bay does not have a peak season and is always available. The moon’s light is the main factor to consider and anything above 15% moonlight will make it hard to see. So, book during the new moon to where 15% moonlight is present. When there is more than 15% for night when the moon rises after 7:45pm, luckily for you at MBTION VIP we do our tour on a pontoon boat so you can swim under it making the bioluminescence easier to see even at 50% moonlight!
The glow in the water is an optic defense mechanism of the Pyrodinium Bahamense Dynoflagelates that live in the waters created using a special protein. In our private tours, we explain everything about them and show you how to make them glow even more as you swim among them.
Swimming in bioluminescence filled water at the biobay is not harmful for humans, but Paralytic Shellfish poisoning occurs from ingesting Bivalve Shellfish (such as mussels, oysters, and clams) from it’s waters. The toxins acquired from feeding from the dinoflagellates ecosystem can cause severe and life-threatening neurological effects.
Anyone can go to the bioluminescent bars and marvel at its glow. At MBTION VIP, we have life vests for kids down to 2 years so everyone in the family can enjoy this unique experience.
The bioluminescence that you see in every biobay in Puerto Rico is the light display of the Pyrodinium Bahamense Dynoflagelates defense system.
Kayaking is probably the worst way to experience the bioluminescence in our biobays, but it is what most companies try to sell because is cheaper, closer, and it is provided by a third party so it’s not on them if you actually see anything. At MBTION VIP, we take you to swim for an hour so you can do it in the best possible way as you interact with the dinoflagellates and make them glow at will.
Fajardo Bioluminescent Bay is 75 minutes away and La Parguera is 2 hours away. At MBTION VIP, we only do La Parguera because it is the only one wherein you can truly experience the bioluminescence since you can swim with the dinoflagellates and make them glow at your will.
